Should we discount a printer’s invoice because they delivered the job a week late?

Answered by Suzanne Morgan, founder, Print Buyers Online.com

Question:
I recently printed some die-cut door hangers. They turned out perfect, but because the printer used a die cutter that was way too small for this job, the job was delivered about one week late. (Our client was not negatively affected by the late delivery.)

My account person thinks the printer (or die cutter) should discount the invoice because of the late delivery. I don’t. It would be one thing if there was something wrong with the job – or maybe even if the client missed a deadline because of this.

What do you think?

Answer:
I agree with you. Unless you have a penalty clause for late delivery in your contract with the printer, it’s highly unlikely that you would be able to receive a discount based on late delivery. Save your request for a discount for jobs where your company or your client is really affected.
