Metallic inks perform best when used on coated stocks. However, they produce different looks depending on the finish of the stock (matte or dull vs. gloss) and if a varnish is applied or not. If you are designing a piece with heavy coverage metallic ink, it's a good idea to varnish the piece. The varnish helps to protect against damage and marking. Another idea for utilizing metallic inks is to add a small amount (5 - 10%) of metallic ink to a varnish. This technique can be used to create a unique and subtle finishing effect.
