What is a touch plate and how might it benefit me?

Question:
What is a touch plate and how might it benefit me?

Answer:
A touch plate is an additional plate added to a full-color print job that is used to intensify a color outside the CMYK range that cannot reproduce well enough or at all by four-color process printing. Strong reds, blues or greens can be helped in this way. Touch plates are usually used on the fifth inking unit of a press. The downside to using touch plates is that it’s difficult to proof the color before going to press. There are several ways to proof the job – including monitor, digital and film proofs, but all have drawbacks regarding color accuracy.
