Are CTP and DTP the same thing?

Answered by Suzanne Morgan

Question:
Are CTP and DTP the same thing?

Answer:
CTP (computer-to-plate) and DTP (direct-to-plate) are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two. Both refer to the devices, technologies, and workflow related to imaging directly to printing plates without the use of film. The difference is that CTP refers to a digital workflow, whereas DTP means it does not have to be digital. An example of the latter is projection platemaking, used for newspaper production, which has been around for decades.
