Petroleum-based vs. Agri-based Inks

Question:
What's the difference between petroleum-based and agri-based inks?

Answer:
Exaggerated claims are made in some quarters for the environmental friendliness of agri-based inks. There is indeed one significant difference: unlike petroleum-based inks, agri-based inks do not emit V.O.C.s (volatile organic compounds) that contribute to air pollution. Some enthusiasts claim that it's safe to drink the soy base. However, no mention is made of the fact that the base becomes toxic when pigment is added and the same pigment is used in both petroleum and agri-based inks. Ink remains a major environmental issue in the printing process and in post-consumer waste recycling.
