Question:
Are there any situations where film-based proofs are more accurate/appropriate than digital proofs?

Answer:
Film-based proofs are more appropriate than digital for film imaged plates. Film-based proofs are also appropriate, and used, for checking die-lines and spot varnishes. However even those applications are now moving to digital inkjet by imaging onto clear substrates. Film-based proofs are also useful for establishing a printer’s standard color characteristic (e.g. SWOP). Once the press is aligned to that standard the printer will then bring the various digital proofing options (inkjet, video display) into correspondence with that color standard.
